Always Learning - July 2009

Repetitive Stories

July 27th 2009 21:52
All children are different, as are their learning styles. Repetitive text is often featured in the stories of young children and although it may not be as interesting a story for the parents, the repetition featured in the text is a great way for children to improve their reading skills. It also gives them a strong base for which to give them the confidence to move on to more interesting and complex tales.

Some of the favourite stories featured in the bookcase of my daughter include Love You Forever by Robert Munsch, We're Going on a Bear Hunt by Michael Rosen, Is Your Mama a Llama? by Deborah Guarino, The Important Book by Margaret Wise Brown and Dance Away by George Shannon.

The Importance of Spelling

July 9th 2009 07:43
I enjoyed learning to spell as a child and hope that I manage to foster the same kind of enjoyment in my own daughter.

Kidspell is a fun spelling website for children which offers games and activities for children to improve their spelling ability.

The great thing about Kids Spell is that you can select from one of their spelling lists or create your own to fit in with your child's needs.

Feline Frenzy

July 5th 2009 04:11
Feline fever has struck our house this week as we are doing lots of cat related crafts and activities. Many of our books feature a cat in some form or another although our favourites are Sam The Firehouse Cat, The Curious Little Kitten Around The House and The Shy Little Kitten.

We found some puppet like characters for the nursery rhyme - Pussycat Pussycat Where Have You Been and will create a little reader entitled A Cat With A Hat.

We have a crossword to complete as well as mazes and tracing pages.

We couldn't help but fall in love with the Hanging Around Paper Plate Cat Craft and cat craft featured at First School.

Famous cats of mention of course include The Cat In The Hat and Garfield.

A Pirate Themed Afternoon

July 3rd 2009 03:20
A rainy day meant we had an unexpected afternoon in the house so we focussed our attention on pirate themed activities.

Our Worldwide Classroom gave us inspiration for a Peter Pan hat shaped story book although many of the other ideas were taken from the pirate themed page on Making Learning Fun.

Some of our favourites included the hand print pirate, pirate pencil banners, cut and paste pirates, beginning sounds worksheets and the count by two activity for pirates.

We enjoyed playing the colour a pirate dice game (yes my daughter won) and finished the afternoon up with some home made treasure maps.

Return To Neverland

July 1st 2009 05:22
Return to Neverland is the dvd sequel following on from Peter Pan although being that this week's post is a two part post, I thought it a very apt way to start. We will of course endeavour to watch Return to Neverland which follows the capture of Wendy's daughter Jane by Captain Hook and the rescue attempt by Peter Pan.

Pirates and Indians feature in this week's activities and Sparklebox came to our aid in the way of pirate masks. We also made a pirate hat, eye patch and flag banner. This afternoon we are going to adorn our faces with war paint and make a feather hat to represent the Indians.

Reading to Kids provided some discussion points on the story as well as some craft ideas.

My daughter is a fan of the crocodile which features in the story but since our recent visit to the zoo, understands that they may not be as friendly as they appear on television. We found this easy crocodile craft and will revisit one of our favourite songs - Teasing Mister Crocodile.
