Inexpensive Paper Crafts

August 14th 2010 23:53
Okay, summer is winding down....this means FABULOUS discounts on paper products.Perfect time to set the kids up for some paper crafts, ( or plan some art projects for your classroom)

Remember making pinwheels? With only scissors, a sheet of paper, straw, ballpoint pen casing and a pin you can teach your kids to make these fun toys. Poke them in the garden, or fix them on bikes and watch them spin in the wind.

- Cut the square from each of the corners toward the center.
- Leave a 1-inch space in the center.
- Poke a hole in the center of the square with the pin.
- Bend every other corner to the center. Hold in place with the pin.

- Place a small portion of the ballpoint pen casing over the pin so the pinwheel will spin easily.
-Push the pin through the top of a straw. Add a small piece of heavy cardboard or cork for safety. Alternately, press the pin into a small dowel.

Water Games

July 28th 2010 12:32
Baby, it's hot outside. Give kids something to do that will cool them off...these make good VBS activities, or "get your work done" summer school rewards....

Try one of the following (and be deemed the bestest parent/teacher ever!)
Fill the Bucket Relay
Create teams of 5 to 7 players.
Give each group a bucket of water, an empty pitcher and a large sponge. Place the bucket and sponge at one end and the pitcher at the finish line. Place the children in between in a straight line.
The player closest to the bucket dips the sponge in the water and then passes it down the line to the last person who squeezed it into the pitcher and then quickly sends it back to be reloaded with water.

The team with the most water in their pitcher at the end wins.

Ice Fishing
Perfect activity for hot summer days. Fill two large roasting pan or coolers with ice and a designated amount of marbles. Break the kids into groups and have them try to fish out marbles with their bare feet or hands. (This game fits in with a "fishers of men" unit in VBS.)

Duck, Duck, Squirt
Add a water gun to the traditional game of duck, duck, goose for some water fun at barnyard-themed VBS week.
All the players to sit in a circle. One person is It and has the squirt gun.
This person walks around the outside of the circle chanting duck, duck, duck, duck, until he decides who to squirt.
The player squirted has to jump up and chase the It person, trying to tag him before he reaches the squirted player's spot and sits down. If he fails, he is the new It.

Balloon Relay
Fill water balloons for two teams. The object is to carry a water balloon between two people without touching it with their hands. A designated middle man places a water balloon between the shoulders of two players on their team. These two must run to the end of the course and carefully drop their water balloon without breaking it. Then the next two people can go. Incorporate memory verses into the game by requiring teams to recite a verse before dropping the water balloon.

Fun Basketball Games

July 21st 2010 01:20
This weekend was my son's graduation party. We had approximately 200 people, give or take a neighbor. I had no idea my little ranch home could handle that volume...thankfully the weather was gorgeous and we had enough forethought to set up a volleyball net, corn hole and a couple of long tables to add to our outdoor seating.
The basketball hoop in the front driveway was a huge focus of attention for the boys. There were constant games, competitions and general silliness all night....well, until my son ended his own grad party by winding up in the ER. 18 stitches later, he is fine. Just a dunk shot gone wrong.

If we would have stuck to these classic games ( or even the online versions) we could have avoided yet another doctor bill....but, ah, the memories.
The party sort of followed us to the hospital...his closest friends and the majority of the soccer team waited on the lawn eating Taco Bell until he was all stitched up. Good friends are hard to find.

Umbrella Art

July 16th 2010 03:25
Praying for rain ....it's a hot and muggy night here in Cleveland, Ohio, we could really use a nice summer shower.

A few things always seem to bring the rain....
* washing and waxing my car
*giving the dog a good bath
*and to really summon the rain, how about an outside art project that needs 24 hours to dry. That oughta do it!

Let's make it a omen and paint umbrellas. Start with solid color nylon umbrellas as the blank canvas and you can make fun works of art.

Read here for the supplies needed and the instructions.

Then, if the rains do come and your crafting has to move indoors, try a couple of the other umbrella collage projects listed here.

Here are a few of the great umbrella art installations from around the world that were posted on Environmental Graffiti. Love these!

SET

Love this game....
As per their website, SET is a highly addictive game of visual perception. I love the random, openendness to this card game. It's fun to play with a wide range of ages to really see different perspectives.

Players have to locate three cards that have each of the four features is either all the same on each card or all different.

B]Ideas to Introduce Math at an Early Age

Many of these activities need little to no preparation. Learning happens all day for a young child. Make the most of the in-between times, errands and daily chores. Incorporating math concepts is easy, but remember to keep the conversations light hearted and matter of fact. Forcing math is a good way to turn them off to learning

Waiting for the 4th of July fireworks to start can often feel like For-EVER to little ones (and big ones too!) With a few craft materials you can create glow in the dark bouncing comets to fill the space before the evening festivities begin.

Comet crafts can be made with young space enthusiasts or children who are studying outer space in school. Comets are rare finds in the night sky. Shooting out from the outer limits of the solar system, these balls of dust and ice start to melt as they approach earth, creating a brilliant tail
