Stepping into my first creative beginning writing class of the year was an eye opener. I quickly realized only two of the 12 students could write more than their own names.

A few quick revisions to my plans and we ended up having a fantastic year together. They progressed in both their story telling and writing skills by year end...thankfully. That class was a challenge...high energy, high creativity, high drama, little writing, yet lots of learning.

Creative Writing Lesson PlansStory Starters

Throughout the lesson time, I emphasize the elements of a story, beginning, middle, end and the elements, setting, characters and plot. By years end they were all fluent in those terms. Repetition is key!
Another beginning of the year activity, was to bring out a wide variety of magazines and let the kids tear out interesting settings and character possibilities. We set these in two big piles on the main table. Towards the end of the class, and in order to get help quickly cleaning up, I'd let the cleanest table go first picking out a setting and a character to tell an impromptu story.

a couple of reliable sources for interesting magazines...

* library book sales

* ask your neighbors, I discovered a retired couple down the street had been singlehandly keeping publishers clearing house in the money all these years. They had such a wide variety..which is also why many of my posted ideas include the sentence...bring out a variety of magazines....

* set a box out at school, church, your parents church...with a sign requesting magazines. This works well and also tends to bring out the surprising and obscure.magazines.

Inexpensive Paper Crafts

August 14th 2010 23:53
Okay, summer is winding down....this means FABULOUS discounts on paper products.Perfect time to set the kids up for some paper crafts, ( or plan some art projects for your classroom)

Remember making pinwheels? With only scissors, a sheet of paper, straw, ballpoint pen casing and a pin you can teach your kids to make these fun toys. Poke them in the garden, or fix them on bikes and watch them spin in the wind.

- Cut the square from each of the corners toward the center.
- Leave a 1-inch space in the center.
- Poke a hole in the center of the square with the pin.
- Bend every other corner to the center. Hold in place with the pin.
- Place a small portion of the ballpoint pen casing over the pin so the pinwheel will spin easily.
-Push the pin through the top of a straw. Add a small piece of heavy cardboard or cork for safety. Alternately, press the pin into a small dowel.

Ready or not, here it comes! School

August 7th 2010 02:59
School is starting in less than a month.....AAAAAAhhhh!!!!! I wasn't nervous until the class lists came out, somehow all the excitable, rowdy, ADHD boys have signed up for my classes....and apparently they are quite excited, according to their soccer coach. He tells me they were discussing the PARTY they get to have all year in sculpture class...(my sculpture class)

I'm a wee bit nervous.

Now, I'm not new to teaching, and certainly am not afraid of a mess, in fact I've been teaching a class called "Creativity Explosion" for several years. The difference is that I've been pulling teeth to get the kids in those classes to loosen up and try new materials, in new ways...I do not think I will be having that problem this school year. Nope, not at all. Hopefully I can keep the materials from flying through the air, off the ceiling and especially out of my hair
Even kitty is scared for me. Thanks girl.

Typically, my first class starts with some variation of a team building activity. Regardless of what you teach, or what age group you work with, teaching a class to work together and LISTEN to instructions is a great place to start.....where it goes from there is anybody's guess.

Learn About the Human Body

August 2nd 2010 11:27
Learning about the human body involves knowledge that children can use for the rest of their life. Help them become literate regarding the systems of the body through playing games. There is a lot of information to absorb; facts about the circulatory system, endocrine system, digestive system, bones and organs offer lots of game playing possibilities.

Use riddles to teach the children facts about the human body. Choose an organ and list the different attributes. Use these to form riddles about body parts. For example, ask the class, " I transport nutrients throughout the body. I am located in the middle of your body to the left. I am about the size of your fist. Who am I?" The answer is the heart. Ask just one fact at a time to see how quickly they can catch on. Include realistic images of the body parts. Cover the majority of the image with a sheet of paper. Slowly slide the paper down as you ask the questions.

Consider letting children create their own riddles and quiz each other. Be sure to check their facts ahead of time to be sure they are accurate.

Fun Basketball Games

July 21st 2010 01:20
This weekend was my son's graduation party. We had approximately 200 people, give or take a neighbor. I had no idea my little ranch home could handle that volume...thankfully the weather was gorgeous and we had enough forethought to set up a volleyball net, corn hole and a couple of long tables to add to our outdoor seating.
The basketball hoop in the front driveway was a huge focus of attention for the boys. There were constant games, competitions and general silliness all night....well, until my son ended his own grad party by winding up in the ER. 18 stitches later, he is fine. Just a dunk shot gone wrong.

Unique Fundraising Idea

July 12th 2010 13:46
Educators, coaches and leaders of all stripes often are forced to come up with fundraising ideas for their organization. Looking for something bound to draw a crowd? Bring the curious out as well as the risk takers and gamblers....
Consider Cow Patty Bingo for your next fundraiser for a school, 4H club, charity or other organization. The game involves penning a cow into an enclosed area that has been divided into a grid. The squares of the grid are numbered and "sold" for a chance to win a prize. If the cow drops a cow patty on your square, you win.
