Art Development through the stages
No need to hurry your child. Each stage is just as important as the next. Enjoy where they are at the moment. Here are the early steps each child goes through and some tips to savor the moment and encourage their blossoming art skills.
Scribbles. Disordered scribbles are a tactile experiment. Like discovering their fingers or toes, children are making important connections. The scribbling stage generally lasts around six months.
- Large pieces of paper taped to their high chair and a few large crayons will keep them busy for a little while, but you can offer other ways to scribble.
- Finger paint with pudding if you dare, or try neon chalk painting.
- Set out a bowl of yogurt and have children dip a piece of colored chalk in before making marks on sections cut from brown grocery bags. Add a drop of mint flavoring to the yogurt to give their drawing a pleasant smell. The yogurt fixes the chalk so that it goes on the paper thick and smooth.
